From October 23 through October 31, 2010, Eindhoven will again be transformed into the design place-to-be during Dutch Design Week, the largest design event in the Netherlands. DDW presents a sophisticated blend of fresh talent, successful designers and established bureaus. Marijn van der Poll and Roland Bird, the two co-curators attracted for the ninth edition of DDW, have made an inspiring and well-balanced selection from a wide range of design disciplines. The programme of DDW 2010 is packed with unique highlights.
During DDW, the public can visit numerous exhibition, award shows, workshops, openings, product launches, seminars and parties. Many of the events are situated around four bigger areas. In the area Stadhuisplein, the must-see exhibit of Dutch Design Awards and the exhibition ‘Liberation of Light’ (O)LED in Designhuis are on view. Fresh design talents exhibit their work in deWitteDame: students of Design Academy Eindhoven present their work during the Graduation Show while fashion students show their designs at the exhibit Modebelofte 2010 in the Krabbedans. Students from the TU/e show their ingenious design solutions at ID’10, the expo of Industrial Design. Around this area of the Central Station, you’ll also find exhibits of Jo Meesters and of the young talents of Dutch Invertuals.
Finally, there are many activities and events in the area Strijp. In the Klokgebouw, the DDW-hotspot at Strijp-S, there are many solo- and group exhibitions, such as Going Dutch (part of the new DDW Business programme) and the Design on Wheels show of the Automotive Technology Centre. At the nearby Strijp-R area, Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek presents his complete collection in his new premises, a renovated ceramics factory.
Besides the exhibitions in the larger areas, there are many smaller activities scattered all around Eindhoven, ranging from an exhibition of the work of Bruno Ninaber van Eyben at Galerie Cécile van Eeden, the workshop of famous designers Kiki&Joost, the group exhibit at Atelierdorp, with Nacho Carbonell and others, to Artspace Flipside with the work of seventeen international designers such as BCXSY and Dave Keune. Outside Eindhoven, you can visit Rietveld & Ruys in Bergeijk for a photo exhibition and sleep over at the monumental building The Ploeg. The complete programme of Dutch Design Week includes over 300 events, 60 locations and 1,500 participants.
One of the highlights takes place right in the DDW opening weekend. During the Award Show of Dutch Design Awards, the best Dutch design in 2010 will be announced during the Dutch Design Awards. The opening of the Graduation Show of Design Academy Eindhoven also takes place in this weekend. Furthermore, there are many interesting lectures, book presentations, workshops and meet & greets this year. Among the crowd-pullers are the Lecturis lecture delivered by the frequently awarded graphic designer Joost Grootens, the launch of the Groene Offerte (Green Quote) for designers and their clients during the talk show BNO Talks, the book launch of top talent Lucas Maassen at Onomatopee and a meet & greet with the famous Finnish designer Oiva Toikka on Sunday October 24 in the Machinekamer (Strijp-S).
Dutch Design Week presents unparalleled ideas, individualistic works and insightful designer solutions. Over 1,500 designers display their work ranging from industrial design, spatial design and graphic design to textiles, sustainable design and design management & trends. Design in all its aspects and disciplines will be addressed: from process to product and from conceptual design to industrial design.
Dutch Design Week takes place from October 23 through October 31 in Eindhoven and surroundings. In 2009, DDW drew 120,000 visitors from home and abroad.
